thanks guys. steve, I did a quick pencil sketch, not much really. Then just went for it in the paint. I did a little value sketch first though which really helps me.
Is the water color applied thick. I always think of water color as very soupy and uncontrolled. This almost looks like a thicker paint, like acrylic. I can see where the water color paint is blending though. There are so many great subtle tones to the areas of light. Once again great work.
It's not applied too thick, but the brush is loaded with pigment. A lot of people I see who paint with watercolor use WAY too much water. Which is why we see so many "dainty" looking paintings that never have any real value. Watercolor can be applied fairly thick which means you can go all the way to black if you like. Using dark pigments and just enough water to make it workable. Indigo is a great pigment to get really dark. Although in this painting I only used 4 colors— Quadridone Yellow, burnt sienna, ultramarine blue, and alizren crimsen.
• Label your posts like this: month.day.year Name. For example, 08.17.09 LWhite •The goal is least a full page in a sketchbook per day • Any subject matter, media, level of finish is fine • You should post at least every three days • Pages should be dated • The overall goal for the sketches is to have fun and to draw when the moment or opportunity presents itself. Also to encourage experimentation and interpretation. The goal is NOT for every page to be pretty.

Fun and nice! Cool distortion to the figure and love the way the light hits only the upper torso.
ReplyDeleteDid you sketch it first or just use watercolors?
ReplyDeleteReally great lighting on the torso. Great piece.
Really marvelous piece, Mr. Skywalker.
