3.30.10 L.White

Hey, not sure if I would call this a sketch or not. It's not for anything in particular and it took about 3 and a half hours (watercolor). Is this a "sketch" or a "painting"?

I;'m doing a magazine cover piece in scratchboard of Larry Sanger, co-founder of Wikipedia. The pose is reminiscent of a famous portrait of Diderot, and the idea is that Wikipedia is "broken", and Sanger is trying to figure out how to fix it.

Was on sketchoholic last night [LINK] watching Bobby Chiu's latest live streaming video and participated in his live drawing contest. Have to draw a given subject in less than an hour. The participants upload their art and then vote on the art posted. It's a fun event and I actually won last night. Get an original Bobby Chiu art sketch/painting.

There is a temple near my house by the river. It looks old, and I've never seen the gates open. Vines are growing up the walls, and i've never seen anyone go in or out. The coolest thing about this temple, though, is that all the carvings and architectural details follow a motif: bats. Bats EVERYWHERE. Bats on the flying eaves, bats on the cornices, door panels, ballustrades. It is creepily cool. It, apparently, is a Bat Temple.

So i have to make up a cool story about it. That's what this is about.

Rough for a possible comics cover.
I'm loving the colors and wondering why this sort of palette is only coming to me now...

Thoughts?

I think it would be cool to tell a hard-boiled story about colonial era Vietnam.

The left arm is a bit funky...Learning to draw with ball point pen.

When i doodle, sometimes i can fill up pages of these in a day. I find this kind of "sketching" therapeutic.

Still playing around with that online app. Don't know why I like drawing bears so much.

Another quick paint sketch...I'm not sure if anyone knows this movie or not.
1 hour quick painting in photoshop. No color picking.

A friend turned me on to this sketching website app:

Pretty cool. Creates a different feel to the sketches

Working on sketching with color only. I took a screen grab from the movie Planet 51 and tried my best to copy the colors in the shot. I won't use the eye dropper tool and I only give myself an hour to complete it.

I thought it might be interesting to scan today's sketch in stages.

This is the final from an earlier sketch. It's for an animated comic. It's obviously taking me a looong time to do.

My kid is 9 months old now and moving like a sun of a gun. So it's hard to do really detailed sketching now. Robot drawn in ink and a little coloring in photoshop.

Continuing with the theme from yesterday of type as image: I think the counter of the bowl of a lowercase "a" in Helvetica is pretty cool looking and I wanted to see what I could do with it. So these faces are make up of the negative shapes of the lowercase "a", "s", "e" and "w" from the font Helvetica.

Watched the movie "Helvetica" last night.
My doodles took on a decidedly typographic quality.
