St Johns Bridge. Interesting that of all the drawing devices available I seem to be attracted to sketching with a brush.

Out at the zoo this weekend with my nephew. Quickest sketches I've ever had to do -- since he doesn't really like to hang around long enough for me to do much more than a brief lay-in.
A study for my landscape painting homework. Turns out I like painting trees.
Just a cool house here in Portland. For you locals it's over in the Mississippi district.
Playing with the pastel medium. Something pretty nice about this stuff -- very painterly but now so messy. Okay, it's messy, but not so toxic?

Playing with a new layout for this old western town painting. This piece has officially become the bane of my existence, a thorn in my side, the pebble in my shoe, the poo in my cereal...ok the last one went too far. Anyways , I think I'm getting closer to what it should be. Any feedback would be appreciated on the comp :)

My efforts to quit "sketching" (because it builds bad habits) and draw thouroughly instead is causing my drawings to become very large. This sketchbook is 17'' x 24'' page to page

Playing with media
Hanging at the doctor office. The pain threshold chart struck me as sorta' absurd.

Its been really hot. Location drawing has been reduced to subway stations and the view from coffe shops.

It's been a pretty hectic week and I haven't posted as regularly as I've wanted to. To make up here's a slew of sketches done while I was camping earlier this week.
I got in and started working sketches like these above. Fun, nice, but a bit of been-ther-done-that.
Then I gave this guy a go. I liked it, but wanted to try pushing the mediums a bit more.
I did this second version of the evergreen tree above while channeling a chinese watercolorist named Chang (I'll find out his full name -- really talented watercolorist) Anyway I really liked it. Thought I'd made a breakthrough.
Tried the process again -- modifying slightly to try and control the medium a bit more -- and came up with this considerably more disappointing effort. And so the search continues . . .

Sorry I keep posting paintings, but its all I've been working on, and has been taking my time. This one has been a thorn in my side for a few weeks. I finally busted it out. Still not sure how I feel about it. Its from a game project I worked on last term. The setting is the Northern California gold rush territory. This is the small western town in the mountains which part of the game takes place. This piece follows a more stylized look, which was established early on.
