contour drawings have never really worked for me before, but maybe I should keep at it.

You should definitely keep at the contour drawing! I think I like this the best of the lot!

I don't know if you've seen Phil Hale's contour drawings, but it's clear to me that his skill there informs everything else he does. Scary stuff for me...
