This blog is a difficult thing. Not only is it a sort (or sorts) of work I don't do otherwise, the very standards I use in my other work have to go out the window... Having finished my last book it took a couple days for me to break in a new book (badly, with yesterday's sketch that I didn't even want to scan).

I just need to remember not to worry, and that the more contour drawings I do, the better. No matter how much I hate them. I just remembered today that I won a prize in Colorado when I was in 7th grade for a contour drawing that I hated. Funny how the hate doesn't change. lol

Sorry to have been away for so long. Just after my last post I went down hard with the sickness that's been going around.

Anyway, I'm now only "mostly dead" and wanted to continue posting the series tonal sketches. This here's the next in the series.

Hey, long time no post! Note that I HAVE been painting and drawing every day, just lazy about scanning.

Here's a quick one I did for the prepoduction style guide today...

Some more woodland creatures, and working out the stylistic marriage of Mark Ryden and Shag. Basically what I'm doing is beginning with strong exaggerated geometric shapes (Shag) and then rounding the shapes out into more rendered realistic creatures. No clue if its working, or not...

The next in the series

It's way too soon to tell whether any of this will pay off in a way I understand, but I'm startign to think that the more I hate the exercise, the better it likely is...

A tonal sketch for a series I'm working on.

I have been tasked with the job of combining Mark Ryden and Shag into a cohesive art style for a pre production game project. Here's some stuff I've been messing around with the last few days. Let the weirdness of randomness begin...

Some conceptual development for a pre production project. This is the dwelling place of our main character who is, in fact, a rabbit.

contour drawings have never really worked for me before, but maybe I should keep at it.

Drawn entirely in ink and then some white colored pencil added. This is based on the oldest and most flattering of the 26 known pictures of the author.

This might be stretching the idea of a "page of sketches" but I was doing some chalk drawing on the sidewalk today. It was part of a children's book store's 35 anniversary.
A great store, and definitely an interesting medium to work on.

Some charcoal and graphite sketches...

Here's about 10 - 20 min worth of work while killing a bit of time in downtown Portland yesterday.

More starts, less finishes

Hey guys, I LOVE the finished work you are doing, it's awsome!! Your clients have to be happy with that level of work.

That said, we need to stick to the blog ideals which are sketching and exploration. Feel free to scribble. Feel free to pull a Jackson Pollock and splatter paint, but let's leave the finished stuff to our websites, etc. The worry here is that showing too much "finished" work will start to tighten up the process and that's the opposite of what we wanted to accomplish here which is:

Draw anywhere and with whatever you have available. Let expression lead the form and technique. Study from the masters and from nature. Get better in the underlying skills that drive the finished work. Post without concern or desire for critique.

Thanks!

A strange collaboration...with both Michael Kaluta who drew the ink Mermaid, and the writer Elaine Lee who wrote the type and mocked it up. I'm happy with the results we'll see if they are....
